The Teacher

In the summer of 1828, there were thirty children that attended the log schoolhouse (where the police station is located). Sophie Gotie was the first teacher.

Women taught in the summer when the unruly boys were working in the fields.

Male teachers taught the winter term and made three times what Miss Gotie was paid.

Morgan and Ira Wisner, brothers of Moses Wisner, Michigan governor, were among the men that were employed.
